WWE expands programming in UK
STAMFORD Conn. Feb. 1 2000–WWE Entertainment Inc. (NMS: WWE) has announced a strategically significant television distribution agreement with Channel 4 Television Corporation in the United Kingdom WWE’s most important international market.
WWE has sold 62 hours of first run programming for $1.136 million per year to Channel 4 representing WWE’s debut on free national network television in the UK complementing WWE’s current 290 hour per year agreement with British Sky Broadcasting (LSE: BSY.L).
Channel 4 will broadcast 52 hours of WWE Sunday Night Heat seen domestically on cable on USA Network on Sundays at 7-8 PM; and four exclusive 2.5 hour replays of domestic Pay-Per-View events Royal Rumble in January Backlash in April Fully Loaded in July and Armageddon in December. BSKYB currently broadcasts WWE RAW IS WAR WWE LiveWire WWE Metal WWE SuperStars and eight 2.5 hour specials based on replays of WWE’s other domestic PPV events.
As a result Andrew Whitaker WWE Senior Vice President of International TV Distribution said the Company has become one of the leading suppliers of television programming to the UK market. David Kerr Channel 4’s Assistant Editor for Sports says "WWE is a ratings phenomenon worldwide and is massively popular in the UK.
