WWE Superstars Sign Letters Urging Candidates to Accept Smackdown Challenge
(WASHINGTON D.C. – October 3 2000) – There is one thing that unites WWE Superstars The Rock Stone Cold Steve Austin Triple H Mick Foley Chyna and Kurt Angle – their desire to see a presidential youth debate on October 17 2000 and to have presidential candidates George Bush and Al Gore appear on WWE SmackDown! to speak to the youth of America.
More than 55 WWE Superstars have signed and sent letters to the Commission on Presidential Debates Texas Governor George Bush and Vice President Al Gore urging them to do just that. Among the 55 signing were Vince McMahon Chairman of WWE Entertainment Inc. (NMS: WWE) Linda McMahon CEO of WWE Stone Cold Steve Austin The Rock Mick Foley Chyna Kane Chris Jericho Eddie Guerrero Too Cool Al Snow The Hardy Boyz Lita The Dudley Boyz Edge and Christian Steve Blackman and Trish Stratus.
In the letters the Superstars called on the Commission Gov. Bush and Vice President Gore to ensure that the majority of the participants in the October 17 2000 town hall debate in St. Louis are young people ages 18-30. "With the active participation of these younger Americans more issues of concern to youth will be discussed and more people will become in engaged in the political process " they wrote.
In addition the Superstars urged Gov. Bush and Vice President Gore to accept the SMACKDOWN CHALLENGE by appearing on WWE Smackdown! which airs on the UPN network. Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura has agreed to moderate the session. "Our nation’s political leadership must do more to attract young voters. Young people have become disenfranchised from politics because our leaders have rarely spoken to them about the issues they care about in forums they recognize " they wrote.
WWE first became active in this year’s election in August when it partnered with Youth Vote 2000 MTV’s Choose or Lose and Project Vote Smart to launch a non-partisan voter registration campaign called SMACKDOWN YOUR VOTE. The National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) joined the coalition in mid-September.
Together SMACKDOWN YOUR VOTE partners have been registering and bringing election information to voters during WWE arena events at WWE New York a site-based entertainment complex in New York City’s Times Square and through the Web sites of WWEvote.com MTV’s chooseorlose.com YouthVote2000.org and NASS’s StateoftheVote.org. The campaign spurred on by appearances by The Rock and WWE Superstar Chyna at the Republican and Democratic conventions has registered more than 110 000 new voters in two months.
