WWE Superstars Encourage Voters to Head to the Polls to Smackdown! Their Votes ...
STAMFORD CT Nov. 3 2000 – WWE Superstars will be "on the air" around the country on Monday Nov. 6 conducting phone interviews with radio stations in major markets. It’s part of the final push by the SMACKDOWN YOUR VOTE! campaign to encourage young people to vote on Nov. 7.
The non-partisan SMACKDOWN YOUR VOTE! campaign has helped register more than 135 000 voters since August 2 2000. The program has been undertaken by WWE Entertainment Inc. (NYSE: WWE) MTV’s Choose or Lose Project Vote Smart the Youth Vote 2000 Coalition and the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS). New voters were registered through registration drives at WWE events and locations and through the Web sites of WWEvote.com MTV’s ChooseorLose.com that linked to Rock the Vote.
The radio push featuring WWE Superstars The Rock Chyna Mick Foley and Al Snow follows the introduction of a new television Public Service Announcement last week that has aired within WWE programming and is being used by TNN UPN and CBS. During WWE programs alone the PSA has been seen by more than 20 million viewers.
Along with the registration drive WWE has made a major effort to increase awareness and bring election information to young people through the WWEVote.com Web site. WWEVote.com includes links to the sites of the major presidential campaigns and offers fans a chance to comment on the importance of voting. In addition WWE online columnists are sharing their own ideas about the importance of boosting this country’s often-minimal voter turnout.
"Our Superstars have helped raise the level of awareness about the importance of registering to vote among millions of young people over the past few months " said Linda McMahon WWE CEO. "Now we want these newly registered voters to go to the polls and Smackdown! their votes on Election Day."
