Smackdown Your Vote! Arrives in Cincinnati as WWE and its Partners Promote Nati ...

Cincinnati Ohio May 14 2001 – The Smackdown Your Vote! drive to register young voters arrived at Cincinnati’s Colerain High School today with Ohio Assistant Secretary of the State Monty Lobb telling students that the closeness of last year’s presidential election underscored the importance of active political participation.

As part of the nationwide effort to promote National High School Voter Registration Month in May Lobb joined WWE Superstar and Olympic gold medallist Kurt Angle Honorary Chairman of Smackdown Your Vote! in a rally at the school. They were joined by another WWE Superstar Albert in delivering a simple message: young people should let their voices be heard by exercising their rights by registering and smacking down their votes in November.

Demonstrating the power of the campaign almost 200 Colerain students registered to vote in less than 30 minutes. This compares with an estimated 250 Colerain students who registered over a period of several weeks at the school during last fall’s presidential campaign.

Smackdown Your Vote! is an initiative of the National Association of Secretaries of State the National Foundation for Women Legislators the Youth Vote Coalition Youth-e-Vote Project Vote Smart and WWE Entertainment Inc.

"Even though 18-year-olds have been eligible to vote for more than two decades too few young people are involved " Lobb said. "It is important to prepare our next generation of voters with the knowledge they will soon need to participate in the democratic process. This event accomplishes that in an entertaining and educational way."

Smackdown Your Vote! was created during the 2000 presidential campaign and registered more than 150 000 young people around the country in a little more than two months.

"We learned again last fall that every vote counts " said Angle. "Every day government makes decisions about our lives. The one time we truly have a say is when we vote in national state and local elections. However to exercise your right to vote first you’ve got to register to vote."

Lobb’s office and the County Board of Elections staffed voter registration tables at today’s student rally. Voter registration tables also will be set up by volunteers from the Youth Vote Coalition at tonight’s WWE Raw is War event at the Firstar Center in Cincinnati.

Smackdown Your Vote! kicked off the rallies and voter registration activities for May last week in Hartford Connecticut. Similar events are planned next week in California and in early June in Minnesota. People can also register on-line through wwevote.com.

As part of the effort in May television and radio public service announcements featuring Angle will also be distributed to various media outlets across the United States.
