WWE Entertainment Files Appeal in World Wildlife Fund Case in United Kingdom ...
STAMFORD Conn. Oct. 16 2001 – WWE Entertainment Inc. (NYSE: WWE) has formally filed an appeal of a British judge’s ruling that supports an agreement with the World Wildlife Fund that that the company believes has placed unreasonable restraints on its worldwide business. The appeal was filed Monday (Oct. 15) in the Court of Appeal in London.
WWE argues in the appeal that an agreement it signed with the Fund in 1994 constitutes a restraint on trade. The Fund now known in the U.K. as the Worldwide Fund for Nature claims that the agreement prohibits the use of the "scratch" logo and the Internet address wwe.com (the fund’s Web address is wwe.org). The timing of a hearing on the appeal has not been determined. It could come late this year or early in 2002.
"We do not believe the Fund has in any way demonstrated that our use of the ‘scratch’ logo or the URL wwe.com has had any impact on the Fund’s activities that would justify such a restraint of trade " said Edward Kaufman WWE Senior Vice President and General Counsel. "We do not believe there is any confusion in the public’s mind between the WWE and the World Wildlife Fund and the logos of the two organizations."
WWE Entertainment Inc. is an integrated media and entertainment company headquartered in Stamford Conn. with sales offices in New York City Chicago and Toronto. Additional information on the company can be found at wwe.com and wweecorpbiz.com.
Editor’s Note: On Aug. 10 2001 Judge Robin Jacob of the High Court of Justice in London sided with the Fund in this litigation. On Oct. 1 he granted WWE leave to appeal his ruling to the Court of Appeal.
