WWE and Sam Goody Team Up To Register Voters
STAMFORD CONN. July 23 2002 – World Wrestling Entertainment™ and Sam Goody music stores a long-standing WWE™ home video partner today announced they are undertaking a national voter registration drive at the more than 800 Sam Goody stores across the U.S.
WWE™ Superstar and Honorary Chairman of Smackdown Your Vote!™ Kurt Angle™ officially kicked-off the Smackdown Your Vote™ at Sam Goody! initiative today at a rally at the Sam Goody store in downtown Indianapolis.
"We need to encourage our young people to participate in the political process through voting for our democracy to remain strong " said Angle. "Smackdown Your Vote!™ is all about bringing this message to the places where young people are – so that it is relevant to them. That’s what we are trying to accomplish through this effort."
The promotion which runs through September 15 includes more than 390 000
voter registration cards and 33 000 voter reminder mats being distributed to
Sam Goody customers. Public service announcements and point of sale displays featuring WWE™ Superstars and the latest WWE™ home video releases will appear in stores encouraging customers to register to vote and reminding them to vote on Election Day. In-store appearances by WWE™ Superstars on behalf of Smackdown Your Vote!™ will occur during the promotion.
"Twenty-six percent of Sam Goody shoppers are between the ages of 19 and 24. As an entertainment authority our stores have the unique opportunity to deliver the Smackdown Your Vote!™ message to key audiences through non-traditional means " said Bruce Martin vice president of marketing for Sam Goody. "Sam Goody stores are all about music movies and games – our customers can come in wanting the hottest new release and leave with the materials to make them proponents of democracy."

The Sam Goody promotion is part of the overall 2002 Smackdown Your Vote!™ activities to encourage young adults to register to vote. In May Smackdown Your Vote!™ worked with the National Association of Secretaries of State and the National Foundation of Women Legislators to encourage high schools across the United States to register high school students. Thirteen states held Smackdown Your Vote!™ days in May as part of that initiative. In September WWE™ will sponsor a Smackdown Your Vote!™ I Signed The Constitution Tour with Participate America and the National Constitution Center. A series of events will be held to encourage the public to register to vote reaffirm their commitment to our country and its Constitution and pledge to undertake community service.
