WWE and the Committee on Childhood Sign a “Pact for Childhood” for ...

Rome Italy – November 15 2005 — A “Pact for Childhood” consisting of eight key points was agreed to by World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. and the Italian Parliament’s Committee on Childhood in order to promote activities that prevent kids from violence and safety risks related to emulating wrestling.

Hon. Burani Procaccini President of the Committee on Childhood and Gary Davis WWE’s Vice President of Corporate Communications signed the Pact today at 2:15 p.m. at a ceremony at the “Matteo Ricci” school in Rome.  Two of WWE’s most beloved Superstars World Heavyweight Champion Batista™ and Bobby Lashley™ attended the event and spoke to the hundreds of children in attendance at the event about the dangers of emulating wrestling moves at home or at school. Another member of the Committee Hon. Marida Bolognesi also attended representing the minority coalition of the Italian political landscape demonstrating the Committee’s bipartisan support for the initiative

The Pact illustrates WWE’s commitment to promote initiatives and cultural tools for the prevention of emulation and related safety risks and to encourage children through the direct testimony of the wrestling Superstars to refrain from the use of violence in any form. WWE will spread the message that wrestling is a form of entertainment performed by Superstars who have gone through specialized training.  Wrestling moves that are seen in WWE shows should not be emulated.

“We have chosen an open dialogue ” Hon Procaccini said “and I believe we are the first legislative body in the world to introduce an agreement concerning one of the disciplines that kids love wrestling. This is a far more productive approach than certain rhetorical and paternalistic attitudes.  The kind of cooperation that we have promoted with WWE represents a model that I hope will be taken into consideration by other private companies for the benefit of children.”

“Selective censorship ” Hon Procaccini added “leads to nothing while direct meetings are useful. Such meetings accustom us to look at this very popular world from very close together with our kids.”

Gary Davis WWE’s Vice President of Corporate Communications added “WWE has a philosophy of using its immense popularity to encourage young people to undertake positive activities in the real world that can have a significant benefit to their country and local community.  We welcome the opportunity to work with the Committee on Children and the Hon. Burani Procaccini to make a positive difference for Italy’s youth who enjoy WWE and its Superstars.”

Batista and Bobby Lashley accompanied Honorable Burani to visit children being treated at Bambin Gesu’ Hospital owned by the Vatican State prior to the Pact signing.
