WWE Showcases New iTV Prototype Developed in AFI’s Digital Content Lab

STAMFORD Conn. February 7 2006 – World Wrestling Entertainment® will be among six content providers showcasing digital prototypes in the American Film Institute’s Digital Content Lab Semi- Annual Production Wrap Showcase in Hollywood today.

Through the American Film Institute’s Digital Content Lab WWE partnered with Cox Communications Ensequence and Softel-USA to develop the new WWE iTV application.

The WWE’s prototype was developed with the multiple business objectives of generating additional buys for its pay-per-view (PPV) and other transaction-based video businesses driving traffic to WWE.com and increasing subscriptions to the WWE 24/7 On Demand SVOD service.  Built using Ensequence’s on-Q® Create suite the prototype was developed for an On Demand platform and designed to encourage advance self-provisioning of PPV events through the a customer’s remote control by offering interactive elements before during and after such PPV  or other potentially televised live events.

The prototype centers on a mock promotion for WWE’s WrestleMania®.  For instance the new application would allow people watching a television commercial for an upcoming WrestleMania (this year’s airs on April 2) or other wrestling event to respond to an icon on the screen to purchase the WrestleMania PPV event in advance while using their remote.  As a reward or incentive for the advance purchase fans would get access to specific video footage promoting upcoming WrestleMania matches.  During the event viewers would have an opportunity to participate in a WWE Trivia Challenge using their remotes.  This would allow them to win prizes such as ringtones and wallpaper for their cell phones redeemable at the WWE.com website.  The post-event experience would provide viewers additional exclusive footage from WWE 24/7 On Demand or another WWE digital programming sources.

“WWE is honored to participate in AFI’s Digital Content Lab with the shared goal of developing new advancements that will greatly improve the television viewing experience in a digital environment ” said Tom Barreca Executive Vice President WWE Enterprises. “It is an additional thrill to have Cox Communications as one of our partners in this enterprise as they were the first Top 5 MSO to launch WWE 24/7 On Demand.  The response we have received from fans to our WWE 24/7 subscription VOD service has been tremendous and this type of iTV application being encouraged by AFI will greatly enhance our viewers’ experience.  We’re excited about what this pioneering application will do for all of our digital video platforms — set-top web and wireless and our distributor partners across them.”
